OUR STORY
THE RECIPES WE KEEP.
hi. we’re amelia & jonathon.
We’ve been married twenty years, most of them spent in and around restaurant kitchens, raising our kids somewhere between the pass and the family table. One of us cooks for a living. The other kept the family recipes.
A few years ago, Amelia made a recipe book.
She’d been collecting her nonna’s and grandma’s recipes for years, so she photocopied the cards, bound them together, and gave a copy to her dad and all his siblings and cousins one holiday. Nothing fancy. Just something for the family to have.
Then, this past winter, her Aunt Alison died suddenly. Amelia flew in to help her cousins, and somewhere in the quiet work of sorting through a life, there it was on the shelf. That little book. Worn at the edges, clearly used for years.
She stood there holding it and understood, in a way she hadn’t before, what a recipe really is: a piece of someone, on paper, still here.
That’s when we knew what we wanted to build together.
Our kids are grown now, and it’s important that we pass down what we cook.
Recipes that used to be passed down are now saved to a tab and forgotten.
Cooking has become content. Mail has become bills.
Red Apron Recipe Club is the opposite of that.
The best recipes in our house are in someone’s handwriting. Nonna’s. Grandma’s. The ones worth keeping always are. So Jonathon still writes every recipe the old way, a pen and a blank card at the kitchen table, and we turn his handwriting into type so it can travel. The card in your mailbox arrives in his hand, printed on archival card stock, paired with a personal letter and a Spotify playlist to cook along to. Opened slowly, cooked often, and kept.
Right now, every recipe comes from Jonathon. Over time, Red Apron will become a platform for many chefs and many voices, a place that connects the people who make food with the people who cook it and brings creation back to the kitchen, the table, and the mailbox.
Here’s to slowing down, putting on some tunes, and turning the screens off.
happy cooking
