THE RECIPES WE KEEP.
hi. we’re amelia & jonathon. married twenty years, most of it in and around restaurant kitchens, raising our kids between the pass and the family table. one of us cooks for a living; the other kept the family recipes.
a few years back amelia made a little recipe book — photocopied her nonna’s and grandma’s cards, bound them, and gave copies to her dad and relatives one holiday. simple, for the family.
this past winter her aunt alison died suddenly. while helping sort things, amelia found that worn, well-used book on a shelf. holding it she realized what a recipe really is: a piece of someone, on paper, still here.
that’s when we decided what to build. our kids are grown, and we want to pass on what we cook. recipes used to be handed down; now they sit in browser tabs and get forgotten. cooking became content. mail became bills.
Red Apron Recipe Club is the opposite. The best recipes are handwritten — Nonna’s, Grandma’s. Jonathon still writes each recipe by hand at his kitchen table. We type it so it can travel, then mail the original card on archival stock with a personal letter and a Spotify playlist. Open slowly, cook often, keep it.
For now every recipe is Jonathon’s. Later Red Apron will include many chefs and voices, linking people who make food with people who cook it and bringing creation back to the kitchen, table, and mailbox.
Slow down, play some music, and turn the screens off.
